The site is in a prominent location on the western
approach to Edinburgh, covering a total of 22 acres.
Adjacent to Haymarket Station and in close proximity
to the architecturally significant New Town, the site
was in need of a particularly sensitive planning solution.
In the analysis of the site, several axis were determined
and these were developed in order to link the plans into the
existing urban grain. These axis defined the routes and public
spaces within the plan, thus enabling vistas to be created
both from within and outside the development area.
The plan includes a mix of housing for both sale
and rent, University student accommodation, hotels
(5 and 3 star) and office space.
The scheme incorporates the classical language of the New
Town while acknowledging the mercantile history of Haymarket.
The fusion of these historical antecedents with modern materials
and compositions creates a development that is contextual
yet contemporary.
