WEST LOTHIAN DESIGN AWARD 1996,
DESIGN AND CONSERVATION AWARDS SCHEME
Formerly part of Bloom Farm in Livingston Village
these farm buildings and stable block had been used
as a building contractor's store and yard for many
years. LDC wished to see them restored to provide
Craft Workshops in an environment conducive to attracting
artist/craftsman tenants.
The main "U" shaped block had very few
windows and as craft workshop would require to have
a lot more light admitted. To achieve this, without
jeopardising the appearance of the existing farm buildings,
led us to a solution where we raised the roof and
inserted clerestory windows thus minimising external
openings.
Internally and externally material selection was
kept simple.
Each unit had its own access and servicing providing
a high level of privacy between tenants. However a
café/social space was created to allow interaction
between artist/craftsmen to take place.
In its last year as the local authority the former
West Lothian District Council awarded the complex
its main Design Award
